The big problem with Kiambu County

A lot has happened over the past year since Thika Live took a holiday. The political setup has changed with the entry of  the County Government and Worrah, we have a Governor, Senator, tens of MPs and whole lot of MCAs. Personally, I love the new setup due to the huge benefits that Wanjiku could get from devolution. Kiambu County and Thika specifically is well poised to reap large from devolution and there are signs that we are heading the right direction although will less glamour and hype like other counties. I might admit we have a long way to go in terms of development in all sectors and it upto the County Government to actualize that since thats what we have mandated them to do.

It illicits pride to see Counties that were previously splashed with dust, hunger and over reliance on government and aid agencies rising up to sponsor development programs in their own backgrounds. Its amazing that Turkana will starting benefiting directly from ground reserves in the area. The scenario is replicated in Machakos with magnificent develpmenet plans being laid down by their governor. Although political misunderstanding derail continous developments, we remain hopeful that four years from now, life will be much more better for Wanjiku.
                                     
The main problem that ails Kiambu County I believe is the widespread unemployment of its youth. The county is heavily blessed with infrastructure that gives it a better start than other counties. It has its own mutated challenges different from other counties that have to fight hunger, poverty, bad roads, political tensions, terrorism and a myriad of other problems. This does not mean that we are better than other counties, but it gives us a peak at the good position we are placed. It doesn't make things any better that the Head of State is a life resident of the county. The strategic location of Kiambu County is both a blessing and a curse. Personally I blame it for the explosive unemployment plus the under utilization of agriculture and industrialization potential of the county.

Kiambu reminds me of the period after the great American depression. Everyone wants a piece of the county if the external investments into the county are anything to go by. Economically, I believe its more rewarding to the county for its residents were to control investments rather than being employed to earn a few thousands. We have the Kiambu county market to satisfy, the neighboring Nairobi, Muranga, Ukambani area and even Nakuru. It is made all possible by the great infrastructural developments in the county. This calls for a real awakening of local investors to arm themselves economically through making huge personal and collaborated investments in real estate, agriculture industries and what we love best entrepreneurship. So what are you doing to change your fortunes.

Human beings are a crazy species. We are often searching for information through reading books, magazines, newspaper or even over the internet. However, it is impossible to learn all that there is to know. It is actually impossible to say that you know 'everything' there is to know. Even on a single subject, you can never know everything. The relationship between Thika Town and Birmingham City

A reader asked me why Thika is known as the Birmingham of Kenya and what is the relationship between the two cities. Birmingham is a metropolitan town in England and it happens to be the one of the most populous towns in the United Kingdom with a population of more than 3.6M people.

The town was at the center of the Industrial Revolution in the 18th century which gave it it the title of the first manufacturing town in the world. Today, Birmingham is the 72rd largest town economy and the second in the UK after London.

  

On the other hand,Thika development as a metropolitan is a similar story with Birmingham. Its one of the top industrial town in Kenya. Before the emergence of Athi River town, Thika's position in industrial development was undisputed. Thika has basically all spheres of industrial development spanning dozens of decades. The metropolitan nature of Thika is evident in its population. The Kikuyu form the largest population in Thika but there are large numbers of other Kenyan tribes. The Akamba, Luhya, Luo, Maasai, Somali and others. On the other hand, Thika is among the top 3 towns in Kenya in terms of Hindu population. All these Kenyans are all employed by Thika Industrial establishments. When planning the town's future development plan, the administrators in Thika drew parallels with Birmingham Town due to the endless similarities. On this onset, the main objective is to plan a similar blueprint to catapult Kenya to economic success that is enjoyed by Birmingham city.
The main industry in Thika has to be the Delmonte Group.

Formerly known as Kenya Canners, the conglomerate is the main grower,processor and exporter of a large proportion of canned pineapples globally. They are owners of thousands of acres of land and employers of many Kenyans. All these workers live around the Thika Town.
Bidco Oil Refineries is home to most of the consumer products found in Kenyan kitchens. Elianto,Golden fry,Cowboy,Kimbo,Chipsy,Ufuta,Mariandazi, Power boy, Gold band, Mallo, Sungold, Nuru soap among many others. Every-time you visit your supermarket, 60% of the cooking fat has been produced by Bidco.

  

They are producers and marketers of these brands and employer to hundreds of Thika residents in both skilled and casual. The company is located along Thika High School Lane junction with the Thika Garissa Highway.
The British American Tobacco (BAT) is also a major player in the Thika Industrial sector. Its the main threshing point for the larger BAT Kenya. They are also located along the Thika-Garissa Highway near Makongeni. Of 10 casual laborers in Thika,one works at BAT Thika. BAT Kenya is a subset of the larger British American Tobacco whose headquarters are in London,UK

Move Out of Your Parent's House: Utahama lini???

When I was in campus, I was always so envious of those people who rented their own rooms outside the campus. I would often go to visit my friends who lived outside campus and I would admire their ability to organize their finances in such a way that they could maintain their own house. Let me just say it here before we go any further, it is not easy living on your own. However, it is a necessary step that most if not all of us have to take at some point.
There is no set age whereby you are supposed to move out of your parents home. Without over-thinking it, if you have finished college and have secured a job (even a temporary one), it is time for you to move out. It is as simple as that. Other notions that one must be 25 or some other age to move out is inapplicable. How many times, did you see the advert of NTV asking 'utahama lini?' and felt as if the producers were attacking you??

 If you felt this way, this step by step guide is meant to help you prepare and eventually (read asap) move out of your parents house.
1. Make the decision
This is the most important of all steps. By this I do not mean that you start telling people that you are moving, because I know many out there have perfected this habit. By making a decision, I mean you declare to yourself that you need to move out and make a commitment to this decision.

2. Create a timeline
At the beginning of each year, many of us make resolutions to achieve certain goals by the end of the year. However, we do not set measurable and specific timelines that guide our achievement of these goals. This is the main reason, people find themselves in November, having accomplished none of their new year resolutions. In moving out,set a particular date by which you should be in your own house. For example, a measurable goal would be: 'In 3 months time, more specifically by 1st Oct, 2012, I will be out of my parent's house and in my own house". That's achievable and measurable at the same time.
3. Make living arrangements
Where and how do you want to live? Do you want to rent a house? If so, how big will it be? This will depend with where you want to live and how much you are willing to pay. For example, if you decide to live in Thika town, you might pay 10,000 for a one bedroom while if you choose to live in the outskirts of Thika, you might pay 8,000 for the same sized apartment. This is a key decision and it must be addressed with careful consideration. Additionally, you might decide to live with a roommate and split the costs. This is a good idea for younger first time tenants.
4. Make a list of the things you will need in the new house
In order to make a house livable, there are certain basic necessities that one must buy depending on personal needs. Make a list of things such as mattresses, beds, beddings, kitchen items, Gas, stove or jiko depending on the budget etc. Please note that you do not have to start with everything. For example, you could forego a bed and spread a mattress on the floor if the finances are a little tight. After a few months, you will find that it gets easier and you can buy the rest of the stuff.

5. Work within a budget
One of the commonest financial mistakes that people make when preparing to move out is the lack of a proper budget. Know that a successful move requires money and you can only work with what you have. Moving on a loan is not advisable unless you have a clear-cut plan on how you will pay back. A budget guides you on how much you are willing to spend on specific items.
6. Start gathering items for you house.
You should start gathering the items mentioned in 4 above at least a month before the move. Buy the items you absolutely need and cannot live without. You can also ask for help from parents, sisters, cousins, grandparents, etc. and they can pitch in where possible. You will be amazed at how many items people have in their houses and never use. Don't worry if some of the items are a little old, you can replace later when you are settled.
7. Move
One important thing to note here is that in renting houses in Kenya and mostly around the world, you have to pay a deposit together with the first month's rent. For example, if a house's rent is 6, 000, you will have to pay 12, 000 as deposit and first month's rent. In addition, you might also be asked to pay 2,500 electricity deposit and water deposit too.

Ok, having said this, it is time for you to move. You need transport to move all your items. You may ask your parents for help on this or you can hire a moving truck.
8. Settle 
One last step: yeah  I know you thought that was it. Settle down in your house. There are people who move out and within two months are back to their parent's house.

Please refer to step 1: Make a decision. Do not be the kind of person who goes home every evening for supper or takes their laundry home for cleaning. If possible, cook your own meals and wash your own clothes. This will help you avoid constant trips home and eventual moving back.

Above all, take it easy and have fun. Many have done it and you can do it too. It just takes a little commitment and determination.

14 seater matatus Vs Kenya Mpya Buses : Thika Matatus on Strike

All public service matatus plying the Thika Nairobi Route 237 have downed their tools. The 14 seater matatus mostly from the Chania Sacco, Chania Travellers, Time Track and Manchester Sacco (Nganya) are currently having a peaceful demonstration near the Municipal Council Offices and the Police Station. The matatus have also parked their vehicles at all major roundabouts in Thika making entry into and from Thika impossible. Thika Live was in town and we have compiled the following photos.

Well that is the leader of the Manchester Sacco who is leading talks with the Police and the Municipal Council. It is believed that the strike has arisen due to the Municipal Council decison to allow the Kenya Mpya 50 seater matatus to operate in Thika. The matatu Saccos believe that by charging 80 bob and on a rainy day 100 bob to Nairobi, the Kenya Mpya buses are diluting the marketing and pushing the matatus out of business. It is also alleged that the Kenya Mpya buses presence in Thika is due to  unfair collaboration between the some Councillors and the Bus company. In a free market, is this action by Kenya Mpya viable or is it cut just throat competition taking place. Well dialogue is in progress and i believe an amicable solution will be found. For our readers we would like your views on whether the Saccos are justified to go on strike or is it just competition fears.

Operation Linda Maisha : Kenya Red Cross Thika Chapter

Have you ever heard of the names Joan Wothaya Kariuki and Jedida Wanja Kariuki????
I bet you think that these are just some random names!! Well think again!!!These are the names of two beautiful girls, one aged 21 and the other aged 19 who died in road accident on Thika Road. They were travelling from Nairobi to their Thika home, coming from a modelling audition. The loss of these lives left family, relatives and friends devastated, not knowing where to turn. More so, their deaths also left a gap in  the Thika community. It left us wondering what could have gone wrong, what could have led to their tragic deaths.

What makes the situation even worse, is the thought that many more lives are being lost on Kenyan roads. The focus has shifted in the recent days to numerous deaths on the Thika Super-Highway. It is our Highway and we are most definitely proud of it but there are more serious concerns that have come up since its inception. I know most of Thika residents use the Highway constantly but do we really consider the risks of using this road.


Enter Kenya Red Cross Society - Thika Branch.
I have often wondered what drives the people who work at Red Cross. One important fact that you must note from here-forward is that they are volunteers. They might get a small stipend to support their daily operations, but they are not paid employees like you and I. However, their commitment and passion cannot be compared to that of those of us who work for other organizations. They are driven and motivated in their endeavours to help other people. The other day when churches were attacked in Garissa, members of the Red Cross were the first to arrive at the scene.

This time, they have come with a sensitization event to help people understand how they can prevent road accidents and deal with them when they occur. The LINDA MAISHA Campaign is an idea developed by Red Cross- Thika Branch and is aimed at sensitizing motorists on Thika Super-Highway on issues related to use and misuse of the road. On Saturday, 7th July 2012, Red Cross -Thika Branch will be conducting a sensitization road show from Muthaiga to Thika, reaching out to people in these areas and helping them use the road wisely thus preventing road accidents.
Let us highlight some of the commonest causes of road accidents in Kenya:

• overspeeding
• drunken driving - (most of us tukitoka out, we drive ourselves home, not knowing that we could meet our death on the roads.)
• Ignorance of road signs  
• Overloading, (Thika matatus are notorious for carrying excess passengers)
• Careless driving (calling, texting or whatever use of phone or other gadgets when driving is included here)
• Corruption
• Un-roadworthy vehicles 

 
So, what do we do to reduce or completely eradicate these horrific and heart-wrecking road accidents???

• First and most importantly, I would like you to go to our Facebook page and leave a comment making a pledge to road safety
• Avoid over speeding, its better to be late than to die or get injured on the road
• Never drive when drunk. NEVER!!Don't ever get into a vehicle driven by a drunk person, even when its your friend. Be a good friend, call a taxi.
• Drive Carefully
• Keep away mobile phones, iPads, iPods, Tablets or any other gadgets you might own, when driving.
• Observe road signs and traffic rules
• Do not drive un-roadworthy vehicles. Service your vehicles as often as possible to avoid unexpected mishaps.

By making a pledge to road safety you promise:

• to always wear a safety belt.
• wear a helmet when using a motorcycle
• drive at safe speeds and keep applicable distances
•  to never drive when drunk, high on drugs, tired or sleepy
• to never use phones or other devices when driving or crossing the road
• Respect the Highway Code at all times
• Have a valid driving license when driving
• Service and maintain vehicles constantly
• to never offer bribes to police and traffic officers
• to never board an overloaded matatu
• to always maintain my safety and that of other road users

Interview with the President : MKU MKUSA LEADER. MARTIN MARTINE

MOUNT KENYA UNIVERSITY : SCALING THE HEIGHTS OF EDUCATION..Thats the newest giant banner that welcomes anyone entering or passing through Thika on the Thika Super Highway Thika Roundabout. Since the launch of Thika Live we have had numerous requests from our readers to feature MKU which we can proudly now present. MKU as an institution is so diversified that we cant be able to cover it in one day. We have therefore broken the presentation into different features which Thika Live will be realeasing bit by bit.

MKU is the latest and fastest growing university in the East African Region. I remember a couple of years ago, there was this small college called Thika Institute of Technology. It was then considered a minor player in the Thika tertiary education sector. Within a few years TIT had revolutionalised education in the central Kenya region and now its the pearl of Thika with its motto being scaling the heights of education. That my friend is now Mount Kenya University.
In every University there is a student fraternity which is headed by a a student Union. Nairobi has SONU, Maseno has SOMU, KU has...  well MKU has MKUSA.  Today we go ahead and bring to you Martin Mashisho Martine..Check Check, that aint a Spanish actor but the President of the Mount Kenya University Students Association. They commonly refer to him as Prezzo Marto. I have seen couple of tall guys here and there but Prezoo my friends is TALL..VERY TALL..Just check this photo
 

This dude is busy but he managed to set some time for an interview at the main campus gardens (very beautiful and well manicured lawns). I must applaud the MKU management for the awesome architecture at the place and the neat environment.

Well lets have a look at how the interview went

Martin, talk to us on the combination of your name, martin and martinae, how did it arise, confusion?

Martin is my first name, Martinae on the other hand is the Maasai name given to me by my parents. 
Tell us something about your background

Well i come from Kajiado Central, Kajiado County. I was born and bred in Kajiado

Being a student in MKU what is your specialty?

Am undertaking a Bachelors in Business Management- Finance Option. Am also a holder of a Diploma in Banking and Finance.

How did you get to know about MKU?

A friend introduced me to MKU. Initially i desired to pursue a course in Broadcasting and Journalism which was my first choice while Banking and Finance was my second choice. However i found that the Journalism college had closed taking applications and since i valued my time and couldn't wait for months to enroll afresh, i went for my Plan B, Finance and Banking. The friend gave me a bronchure which after perusing made me decide on my destiny. Thats how i found myself in MKU. 
Relocating to Thika which was relatively a new town,how was the experience?

Initially it was difficult to cope since the level of security at the time was a  bit wanting. The culture was also different but i quickly adjusted to the new life and took it very positively

How is Thika so far and do you love it?

Thika my friend is awesome. Thika is my second home and i love it. One, life is very affordable especially for a student. Nowadays security is enhanced and the are no issues of lack of water. Accomodation is very affordable and readily availbale.

How did you find yourself into Student Politics ?

I usually don't call it student politics but student leadership. A politician will do anything and go to any lengths to manipulate people and situations for his own sake. On the other hand, a leader can do anything using all machinery to help his people. I consider myself a leader and an in born leader in that case.

What do you mean by inborn leader?
Well i discovered my leadership qualities long time ago. When in Primary school i was selected to be the the school head boy. When i joined High School i was appointed to be the school captain. 2 weeks after joining MKU  i was appointed the Chairman of the Maasai community in the campus. I was then selected the class representative. The following year i chaired the Electoral Commission MKU that oversaw the 2010 student elections. I chaired the same body the next year. In 2012 i was elected as the MKU student body (MKUSA) President. Am also the University representative in the Student Arise in Africa Initiative and this year i was appointed as a member of the TASK Force Committee - Kenya Universities.
That is a very rich curriculum vitae you have there ,but how do you strike a balance between leadership and your studies?
A leader delegates duties that need to be delegated. Am in charge of 37,000 students so there is a high need of delegation. I have ministers who we work with me as a team. On the other hand i allocate time for everything including my studies. During my free time you will find me in the office while in the evening am doing my revisions, assignments or participating in a discussion group. Am an avid handball and basketball fan and you can spot me in the court watching the team train.

Why choose MKU?
Despite being a private university, MKU is the most affordable one. They provide quality education at a very affordable fees structure. MKU also offers courses that you can never find in any private university. Bachelors in Pharmacy and Nursing are very popular courses here. Due to its central location and its presence near the Thika SuperHighway, MKU is the ideal University for any one who needs a serene environmnent for learning. Our city Campus is in Nairobi is a ideally located to cater for the Nairobi students. Our presence is also felf in Rwanda,,,,
What are your future aspirations?
As a leader, my skills can be rendered in many places. My leadership is highly demanded in Kajiado County where the youth want me to vie for a County Representative seat. I really want to finish my Bachelors first then take a Masters from a university in Korea. But i remain a Kenyan at heart and will thereafter come back and take part in nation building.
       
What is your take on Kenyan politics
I believe that Kenyans deserve the best leaders regardless of the tribal background. We should rid ourselves of our tribal tags. I wish Kenya would be like MKU where we have a Maasai Student President, a Kikuyu vice president, a Somali Secretary General with Turkanas, Merus and Luhyas holding numerous ministerial positions. As voters let us not judge voters from the tribal backgroung or depth of their pockets but from the charcter and what they can deliver
Any mentor or role model out there?
I hold Barrack Obama with high esteem. He made Martin Luther King's dream a reality by becoming the first African American president. Though from humble backgroungs and from African descent he ascended to the Highest office in American. His slogan yes we can remains my driving force
What is your parting shot?
I would like to send a message to  Kenyans,as we approach the election period, lets u embrace love, peace and unity. This country remains important than any individual and lets avoid any repetition of the 2007/2008 election violence.

Supermarkets in Thika : Lets go shopping

Biscuits, cocoa, tissue paper, sugar,bathing soap, detergents,toothpaste, kiwi, a can of spray and a packet of nodules. For some the list may include more items. For others including me the list may be shorter or even very very short. By short i mean bathing soap and tissue. This my friends is the list of items we used to have when going back to High School after the Holidays or mid term. Many of us who come from the rural areas used to buy the items from the local shop. Those in town and the few from Ushago were lucky to be given cash to pass by the Supermarket in town and buy the needful. At that time Thika had very few supermarkets namely Mathai Supermarket, Maguna Andu and once upon a time Safeways Supermarket. Tuskys Supermarket was just laying its first foundation bricks.

Over time shopping in Thika, has been revolutionized with the entry of different supermarket into the market. This is inclusive of numerous hyper shops and retail joints. The most popular and pioneer supermarket in Thika over the years remains Mathai suermarket. I dont know the origin of the name but i hear from some quarters that thats the name of the owner. Or maybe he is of Maasai descent but i highly doubt it..someone should educate me on that. Initially Mathai supermarket was just a floor of shopping but over time it has expanded to cover about 4 floors of the Mathai building.
Their basement remains my favourite especially the steps where there is that big mirror you cant help looking at yourself. When in the Thika CBD, its the most ideal place to do your shopping. But be wary especially during school opening days since the supermarket is lined by hundreds of High School students. After meeting in the central town the students head into the supermarket in droves which makes that day less than ordinary for household shoppers. Mathai Supermarket's presence in the Central Kenya region is consolidated in Nyeri and Muranga where they have more branches.
After the entry of the Tuskys brand into the Thika Supermarket affair, shopping has never been the same. Its strategic location metres away from the Thika-Garrisa Highway is ideal for upmarket customers especially those near the Section Nine Estate, Juja and those who want to avoid the congestion of the central town. Its location away fron the central district makes it less favourable especally for the ordinary mwananchi who don't own personal cars.
But there are Tuk-Tuks that ply to and fro. Thika Live has observed the shifting of the market towards that route due to emergence of numerous retail joints, pubs, and the ultra modern building housing the new National Bank Thika Branch. The recent municipal directive to rid off the route of matatus heading out of town has also reduced the congestion along the road.
Few years ago, Leens Supermarket was Leens store with its location being the building opposite the Thika Police Station now converted to shopping stalls. However Leens introduced a supermarket wing opposite the December Hotel. The supermarket owned by an Asian Family has upped the competition in the supermarket industry by having a large variety of products housed in their three floors. These include; Electronics, clothing, Household wares and the list is endless.

Kassmart Supermarket centrally located opposite the Christina Gardens is also a popular shopping spot. Although contricted in terms of space, the supermarket is quite a household name. Its central location also makes it a favourite among the Thika consumers. The supermarket outlets also has a branch in Githurai to tap into the densely populated market.

For Thika consumers who frequent the main Bus Park there is the Maguna Andu, Gideon Supermarket and Thika Tex Supermarket. Magunda Andu being on of the pioneer joints is the favorite of the three. Although its space is limited, you cant help but marvel at the thousands of products housed within the small space and still you can get maneuver space with your shopping basket.
Well that was just a brief look at the major supermarkets in Thika. Overtime, Thika Live will have an individual and more personal look at the supermarkets to understand their origin, products and special offers.

One on One with Vizzy Vizzy-Thika's most popular HypeMaster

This week we have had a deep and insightful discussion about Thika and its business potential. Well today we are changing gears and relaxing our sleeves. No matter the day's happenings its always good to unwind. Some of us do golf (what?) others relax with a movie and once in a while you head to your favourite spot. Reminds me today its Friday and i know some peeps out there are PAID UP ..Sometimes i fit in the last group..the ones that head to a social gathering where food, drinks and music are served in one plate..This results in a lot of dancing, some staggering here and there and a headache on Saturday morning..That is the time you start wondering,was it worth the headache..well if that was the idea of fun and unwinding, then it served the purpose.

Sometimes you go to a spot where the food is nice, the drinks out of this world, the company great, the music awesome but the mood is not right..With time your mood is downed and since you dont seem to be enjoying your evening you troop out..Well in the entertainment Industry there is an expert whose work is to keep the clients on their toes,jumping,shouting their wind pipes dry (sounds familiar?) and waving their hair,dreadlocks,viparas {if u dont have shakeable hair) and hankerchiefs.These are commonly known as the Hype-men.

These are the guys that work hand in hand with the DJ to make the music more enjoyable..You will hear them shouting..mikono juu ya hewa...or introducing the latest dancing styles to the audience. In most cases they will double up as MCs where they will take charge of an occasion throughout the programme and make sure that the guests don't get bored. Its not an easy job especially coz many of us are afraid of masses especially those expecting you to say the right thing and keep them entertained. If the job is not well done,  be ready to get booed by the crowd which i think is not a good experience.

This guy is responsible for the biggest Bongo music celebrities that have graced Thika. He has also organized numerous beauty pageants in the Thika region in collaboration with other key stakeholders. He has Mceed in numerous celeb weddings and corporate events. The key marketing man at Porkiez Night Club. He is the face of its publicity department, making sure that the club remains the top entertainment spot in Thika. We introduce to you Vizzy Vizzy commonly known as 237 HYPE MAN. The ability of Porkiez to remain afloat as other joints open and close shop still remains a query. Well Thika Live had a one on one with Vizzy Vizzy and here is the first segment of the interview..

Just Give us a brief descrption of yourself
Am Vizzy Vizzy popularly known as the 237 hypeman. 237 just means Thika because thats the route number for all public vehicles plying the Thika Nairobi Route. Am a hypeman, Mc, Events Organiser and the Marketer for Porkiez Nightclub.
Thats a long list, how do you juggle all those in a 24 hour day?
Well it depends with the environment and the kind of people you are working with, plus your drive. For one i work in Porkiez Night Club which by all standards is the top spot in Thika and the Central Region. The people i work with are very supportive and good at their work: be it the Porkiez Management under the MD Shakie Wainaina, the DJs and the staff. They make working at Porkiez a good experience which really makes my work more enjoyable 
How long have you been on the scene?
I tumbled in the industry back in 2003 which makes it around 9 years
9 years thats a long time. What are your credentials in terms of the events and artists you have worked with?
Initially before i joined Porkiez Nightclub i worked in Tanzania with Respect Entertainment under Chief Kiumbe. Chief Kiumbe is the main promoter in Dar who is behind the success of Matonya, Prof Jay, TID, Hussein Machozi, MB Doggyman and the list is endless. He is the guy who makes sure that their songs translate to regional success and gigs. With Respect Ent. we managed to bring Matonya to Thika when his star was shinning the most. Many can remember the show he had at Blue Post Hotel back in 2008 which was the greatest show by a Bongo artist in Thika. We also brought MB Doggyman to the Vybstar Hotel in 2009.
On the local scene especially Thika region, what have been your main projects?
 The Miss & Mr Mount Kenya University Beauty pagents for 2004, 2005, 2006 are some of my main projects around Thika. The pagents were so successful since they really uplifted the profile of everyone who worked in those project. Well, I do Mcee at weddings and this has seen me taking charge of wedding events and other corporate events. There are times i shed the jeans to don the cutting suits esecially when dealing with corporates.

Currently what are you working on?
My current project happens to be the best i have ever worked on. Its called the Divas Nite and it premiers at Porkiez every first Friday of the month. Its the first one in town and its sucess so far is unimaginable.
Wait a minute, what Does Divas Night Entail?
Well, that Friday is reserved for the ladies whereby, the ladies don their best and sexiest evening wear. They then pose for the camera and then profiled on the Porkiez Facebook Wall which has more than 10,000 followers. The audience votes on their favourite of the contestants and the one with the highest number of likes receives a whole 10,000k and VIP treatment at Porkiez.
That's a new one..what do you have for the gentleman..Diva like..?
Well the majamaas gets to watch the ladies on Divas night..hahaha..Plus there is the karaoke Nite for those gentlemen with polished and mellow voices that can woo the ladies. But we never restrict on the voices, just bring your voice, no matter how rough it sounds..it could be your breaking point.
How has it been working at Porkiez and what does a guest has to sample there? 
At porkiez, everday is a special day. There are times you will go to an entertainment spot on sunday Nite or Monday and find it virtually empty unless there is a soccer match. At porkiez we have events from Monday to Sunday. On Monday we have the East Africa Nite where we release the best African hits, Tuesday is the Karaoke Nite, Wednesday is Salsa Nite,Thursday is the Bursta Bubble formely known as the Bend Over Nite, Saturday is the Tango Nite and Sunday is the Wire Wire Nite which is dedicated to all reggae lovers. For Porkiez,everyday is different making sure we give our clients the best.

What do you have for the generation that is past the riddims and the heavy dancing till morning?
First, Porkiez is not all about music and dancing. We understand that not everyone comes to Porkiez for the Music and booze. There are those clients that are there to have a meal. On that context we offer exquisite dishes ranging from the best of white meat, best pilau in town, burgers and the menu is endless.
On the ground floor we have the ideal place for all Rhumba and Benga lovers. If you think riddims, Rock Music and House is not your favourite..then this is place to be since the deejays have well sampled Rhumba and Benga tunes.
Porkiez has been there since yester years and still you are the biggest crowd pullers in town : How do yo do it?
You see, you must be creative and innovative in business. Additionally management is very key to running any business. Lastly knowing your customers' needs and treating them with a personal touch finishes the equation. Under Shakie Wainaina the Managing Director at Porkiez we have the best boss. His management style is the reason the Porkiez theme is still afloat.
In most joints, there are VIP segments which are unreachable..well at Porkiez everyone is made to feel like a VIP. Porkiez is the only joint where the MD will casually approach a customer and chit chat with them. Its the only Spot you will receive a welcoming handshake by the bouncer at the door, a smile from the waiter or waitress and while having your drink receive a pat on the back from the MD.
