Its been such a long day..The Boss has today stepped on your toes a hundredtimes, the days sales have gone so down and my unfortunate friends who have an Asian as a boss have received numerous shout outs that nearly made you slap him and say..wacha hio kazi ikae..kwani nini..only that you owe him your monthly salary so its wiser you just eat the humble pie..On your way home the matatu conductor dodgingly flees with your change and coz its already dark you did not have a good view of the matatu...That especially happens with the Makongeni and Juja bound matatus..reminds me there is one that hepad with a cool 460 bob...the worst thing i was from a party and  leave alone remembering the matatu and its conductor, i could not recall ever being in a matatu that day..Talk of being mututhwod..The moment you get into the house you just feel like collapsing on the sofa and screaming out loud..WHYYYYYYYYYYYYY ME.

                           

Then you remember your buddy sambazad you a movie the last time you were together..You slot it into your DVD, laptop or worse off that P3 computer that no one is willing to buy from you..Its movie time..

The movie starts well but Damn..Its a camera copy...Its all blue you cant even know if it was acted at night, during an eclipse or worse off at 12 noon..And before Nicholas Cage finishes off the bad guy or for the ladies before Ashton Kutcher burst to the church to stop the wedding, the screen goes blue..haha..the scratches cant allow, and you cant finish your movie...This takes you back to the first feeling before the movie..Angry, frustrated and bored with these movies..

                                        

Its 9.25 so you turn to the TV..Sorry all stations are airing business news with reports that the dollar did this and this, went up and down,,blah blah blah..By the way you cant even remember the last time you saw a dollar..n not the ones on Lil Wayne and Rick Ross videos, i hear they are all scanned and photocopied...
The big question is...WHERE THE HELL DID YOUR FRIEND BUY THE MOVIE...ok, let me make it better..WHY THE HELL DID YOU NOT BUY YOUR OWN MOVIE...
For those who frequent Thika, you have already seen the numerous if not hundreds of movie stalls selling series, documetaries and latest movies.The market in Thika is good but they owe it all to Quest Entertainment...

Art.....Msanii na Sanaa

Today, I want to introduce a topic that is so close to my heart. I don't know why but I just find myself inspired when someone talks about art. If I see you making art, be sure I must speak to you! Note the word 'must' because its like am pulled towards art. It has such energy that you cannot keep away.
When in school, I always admired people who could draw. (You must understand that I cannot draw anything. I usually freak out when my nieces ask me to draw a boy or a girl and the worst is a car.) Maybe its my lack of any artistic talent that makes me feel so pulled toward this topic. However, I am a firm believer in the notion that everyone on this earth is an artist. Being able to organize my thoughts in such writing is art. For scientists, organizing ideas and coming up with an invention is art. For geeks or nerds, whichever you prefer, (I love geeks), assembling a computer or coming up with software is art. I love it all and its art.

Now to the most important part, I want to introduce you to one of the greatest artists in Thika. His name is Denis Muthomi, most call him Denno. I firts saw Denno's work while I was passing by his shop. I immediately went and said hi and just admired his work. His art company is called Q5 CREATIVES and he is located near YMCA in Thika.

According to Denno, Q stands for "kiu" in Swahili, which he notes that Thika has 'kiu' (thirst) for art. On the other hand 5 stands for the handshake. Dennis went to art school at Buruburu Institute of Fine Arts (BIFA). His works range from Paintings, Drawings, Sculptures, Dry material decorations among others. He also does interior design and architectural designs.

I love each and every one of these pieces. His talent is amazing and he does a pretty good job. He can also customize pieces according to the customer's taste. And am mostly proud because he is from Thika, our town, our city. If you love any of these pieces or more importantly would love to get a customized art work, just call Dennis at 0724 026 487. Niaje aunti smart : The case of the Thika street kid and AFCIC

Sasa aunti smart, siunipatie five bob ya mandazi (hey aunt smart, please give me a 5 bob coin)...Sounds familiar? Has to..Thats usually that small dirty, tattered boy with a dirty bottle in his mouth near Leens supermarket..There is the older female one with "wailing parcel" tucked on her back..wait a minute..its a baby..This one has a larger bottle in her mouth with a dirty sackcloth besides her full of dirty scrap metal and cardboards. They maybe fortunate that day to get a coin from you but 6 out of 10 people will just brush them off..

When introduced to early life of poverty especially in the urban areas, it maybe hard for these kids to understand the need to go to school especially when Primary School in public schools is absolutely free..That is the main reason that many people banish them...weee kachokora haka enda shule uwache kuombaomba ( You street kid stop begging and go to school )

There comes in Action For Children in Conflict. This is a registered non government organization in Thika that has dedicated its energy to protecting, supporting and rehabilitating street kids and other vulnerable children and their families. Every time there is a crisis in any home, the child is the greatest casualty..
Maybe if Charles Taylor had not supported the resistance that maimed children by making them child soldiers and amputating their limbs maybe he would have gotten a lesser sentence than his 50 years in jail..That explains the high value that the life of a child should be held with.
One day when that kid begs for a bob, just take time to ask the reason he or she is on the streets..war, extreme poverty, hunger, illness, persecution, or neglect..His reasons will automatically fall within any of the seven.

According to  Action for Children in Conflict the main reason you see the street kids sniffing glue and taking those strong narcotics is as a means of escaping the cold and hunger which pervade their daily lives.
To help out the kids, AFCIC believes in reducing the number of street kids in the streets of Thika by  providing sustainable return to the society. Allowing this vulnerable group to support itself, makes it less reliant to donor fund. By engaging all stakeholders in this mission through dialogue and mission sharing, AFCIC ensures justice to each of these poor ones.
 
The organization has therefore established programs around Thika and its environs. From Makongeni to the Old Thika Tannery near Thika Memorial Hospital, the organization has ensured that these poor souls are protected and rehabilitated to the normal society that has always discriminated against them.

1600 children daily..yes i did not falter there..that is the number of children under the school feeding program initiated by AFCIC across various primary schools in Thika.

The statistics for the success of the organization since 2004 are limitless. Every time you hear of a transformational story from a street kid around Thika, just know you have felt the hand of AFCIC. The organization has extended their hand into buying a 3 acre piece to develop an integrated children center near Karibaribi to ensure full rehabilitation.

The Thika Live Blog community and other stakeholders in this mission welcome the support of our online friends in ensuring that the street kids around Thika are fully rehabilitated into fully self dependent young men and women.

Madaraka Day in Photos

Friday, Saturday n Sunday...that was a long holiday especially for those in the public service...well Friday was Madaraka day and Thika Stadium hosted the celebrations...a lot happened and it would take hours to give Thika Lovers the full brief for that day...what a better way to tell the story than from photos taken.

When the Union Jack was lowered in 1963, that's what went up...even though we have our challenges, don't forget the colors of our flag...and well, their meaning.

This bird could not be left behind for the Madaraka celebration...now i understand the unfamiliar soprano during the national anthem
